What you need to know
1. What Is the ITV?
The ITV is Spain’s equivalent of a vehicle inspection, required for most vehicles. The frequency depends on the type and age of your vehicle. For example:
Cars: Every two years after 4 years of registration, then annually after 10 years. This inspection is also necessary when changing a car to spanish plates.
Motorcycles: Every two years after 4 years.
2. How to Prepare
- Documentation: Bring your vehicle’s registration certificate (Permiso de Circulación) and the technical inspection card (Tarjeta ITV). They may ask you for its EuroCoC or ficha reducida as well. Bring it with you.
- Vehicle Check: Make sure lights, tires, brakes, and emissions are in good condition.
- Personal Documents: you will take your NIE certificate OR residency certificate/card AND your passport.
- Credit Card

3. Where to Go
ITV stations are spread across Spain, and booking an appointment it’s mandatory. Many stations allow online booking, making the process more convenient.

4. The Inspection
The inspection involves checking your vehicle’s emissions, brakes, suspension, lights, and more. If you pass, you’ll receive a sticker to display on your windshield. If not, you’ll need to make repairs and return for a recheck.
Presently, actually taking the test can feel quite overwhelming. If you’re feeling a bit anxious about taking your vehicle yourself, you’ll find many garages that will do it for you for a small fee. Simply drop your vehicle off at the garage, and they’ll take care of the rest!
Unlike in the UK, for instance, where you take your vehicle to a local garage and leave it with them to perform the checks, in Spain, you are required to participate in certain tasks during the process.

How much does it cost?
The expenses of booking an ITV test does differ and depends significantly on the vehicle you drive. The costs beneath are the most extreme and in Euros (January 2025)
Two wheel mopeds – Max €30.78

What Happens if my Vehicle PASSES inspection?
If your vehicle passes the inspection, you will be given a test certificate and a small colored sticker that must be displayed on the right-hand side of your windscreen. This sticker indicates the month and year when the next test is due.
If you fail to display the sticker and are stopped by the police, you will be fined on the spot and given ten days to provide proof of passing the test.
ITV stickers, also known as V-19 stickers, alternate in color each year between green, yellow, and red.
Passing the ITV not only keeps you compliant with Spanish law but also ensures your vehicle is safe for you and others on the road. Good luck!
What Happens if my Vehicle FAILS inspection?
Ideally, your vehicle will pass, but if it fails, you will be given back your documentation along with the test sheet stamped with the word “Desfavorable” and the reasons for failure. These reasons are not typically discussed with you, so if your Spanish is limited, you may need to consult a Spanish-English dictionary or translator.
You will then have 1-2 months to return to the test center with all the issues resolved at no additional costin the majority of cases.
If it is not the case (and the ITV report states you need to pay) and you manage to fix the issues and return on the same day, you won’t be charged again. If you return with the faults repaired within 15 days, you will usually receive a discount on the cost of the retest. However, if you fail to return within this period, you will be charged the full test fee again.
It is crucial that you return to a test center, as failing to do so will result in the Department of Traffic being informed that your vehicle is on the road without a valid ITV — effectively making it illegal.
Since October 2017, you are no longer required to take your vehicle back to the same ITV station for a retest. You can use any ITV station for the retest.
Additionally, note that if your ITV has expired, you are not allowed to drive the vehicle on the road under any circumstances, even to the ITV testing station. If it has expired, you must transport the vehicle to the testing station on a grúa (tow truck).

Yes, he can. The vehicle may be taken for the ITV by anyone, as long as they have its documentation.

My previous ITV inspection was on October 11, 2024, so I should go back for another ITV, but due to illness, this probably won’t be possible for another week. Will this cause any problems?

Hello Fernanda,
If your question is if you can drive a car with an expired ITV inspection, you should not. If the police stops you, they will fine you. But if your question is if you can go to the ITV station even when the current inspection has expired, yes you can.

I have a renewal due in December, I am due to come to spain in October for a week , is it possible to get a test done earlier than the expiration date and if so how much earlier?

You can get a test up to 30 natural days before the expire date. Not earlier.

Seems the link to find an ITV station or to book is only for ITV stations in Andalucia, not any other community. It would be worth stating that up front.

I took my darcia Duster for itv today. It failed on computer reading. I already paid 56. Euro when I booked my appointment. After it failed. I was then charged 22.95 euros, and to go to Lane 2. Failed again. I then took the car to FEU VERT and they said it was the radio. That’s why itv could not get a computer reading paid them. Immediately returned to itv in ontinyent. Got to pay yet again 22.95 could not believe I had to pay, not a happy person. Go to Lane 2. It passed. But returning on the same day, think I’m stupid. But what can one do.
